Travels and Adventure

Richard McGuire, Nepal, 1973

On the Road

In my late teens and early 20s, I travelled through much of the world on a shoestring living out of a backpack. One of my heroes was Jack Kerouac, author of On the Road. This section is about my early travels.

Children, Kerala, India

Photographic Journey

When my passion for photography reignited around 2002, I put together an exhibit of photos from my travels in the 1970s and 1980s. I displayed these in my cousin's restaurant. Though the exhibit had limited success, and in hindsight, some of these pictures are flawed as photographs, they provide a glimpse of the world at an interesting time.

Young boy, Herat, Afghanistan

Journey through Afghanistan

One of the most interesting (and difficult) countries I travelled to in 1977-78 was Afghanistan. I did a circuit around the country, visiting some of the more remote communities, as well as those on the "Hippie Trail." This period was just before the 1978 coup that led to the Soviet invasion and decades of subsequent war. It's a glimpse of a beautiful country before the conflict.

Holy man, Rameswaram, India

India, the Black and White Series

Travelling through India in 1977, I had to ration my film, and couldn't always afford to use my favourite, but expensive Kodachrome slide film. I traded a pocket calculator for 10 rolls of Ilford FP4 36-exposure black and white film, which I used to take a number of portraits of Indian people. I had the film processed locally, and often it was badly done or damaged. Years later, scanning the negatives and working on the images in Photoshop, I was able to restore a number of them.

Scarlet Macaw, Ecuador

Ecuador Adventure

I've had a number of opportunties to travel in Latin America, and I was lucky to be able to spend a month in Ecuador in 2006. It's a country I had only visited very briefly previously, but it's a fascinating country. I managed to visit most regions in that short time because it's also a fairly small country. By this time, my photography was all digital.

Good Ol' Boy

My Checkered Past

In the 1980s, I worked as a journalist on a number of community papers, and then launched my own publication about computers. This page looks at some of my adventures other than travel.
